The Power of Organizational Culture

Author : Kenneth Rice
The cultural subconscious of the organization sees strengths in differences. Do leaders shape culture, or are they shaped by it? The apostle Paul was a cross-cultural missionary, a Jew who sought to be "all things to all people" in order to bring them the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:19-23). Over time, every organization develops distinctive beliefs and patterns. Some of these are beliefs are unconscious or taken for granted, reflected in myths, fairy tales, stories, rituals, ceremonies, and other symbolic forms. However, many of them are ingrained into the organization's culture by its leaders. Leaders who understand the power of organizational culture are much better equipped to understand and influence their organizations.Building and developing this organizational culture is not something we learn from a book or hear from a Sunday sermon. Leaders must be actively engaged in bringing out the best in their people and work to align those traits with organizational needs. "The greatest potential of your organization is tied directly to aligning what your people do best with what your organization needs most." (Hoover, 2005, p. 9).Hoover, John and Valenti, Angelo (2005). Unleashing Leadership: Aligning What People Do Best With What Organizations Need Most.
