I know all of you are wondering why I am writing about a little known plant called "Jatropha Curcas". Well... it all has to do with making biodiesel and the production of electricity using biodiesel as a fuel. This is to inform you of a source of vegetable oil that is relatively unknown in the United States and North America. The European community has already seen the light as have some Asian, African, Indian, and South American countries. Running engines on vegetable oil is nothing new... did you know that Rudolf Diesel originally designed his engine to run on peanut oil? Maybe the US has not seen the light yet because we are mostly engaged in the growing of food crops and oils like soybean oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, and peanut oil. All these oils are edible and thus fetch high prices. After all, why should US farmers grow a completely inedible plant!? Used cooking oil is great for the "do it yourself" biodiesel enthusiast, but there is not enough supply of used cooking oil to supply a whole nation.
This is where Jatropha comes in...Jatropha has the following benefits when looked at from the fuel production angle:* it costs almost nothing to grow
* it is drought resistant
* it can be grown almost anywhere - even in sandy, saline, or otherwise infertile soil
* it is easy to propagate (a cutting simply pushed into the ground will take root)
* it is not invasive, or spreading, or damaging like kudzu
* it is capable of stabilizing sand dunes, acting as a windbreak, and combating desertification
* it naturally repels both animals and insects
* it lives for over 50 years producing seeds all the time
* it is frost hardy (does not like hard freezes)
* it does not exhaust the nutrients in the land
* it does not require expensive crop rotation
* it does not require fertilizers
* it grows quickly and establishes itself easily
* it has a high yield (Jatropha can yield about 1,000 barrels of oil per year per square mile - oil content of the seed is 55-60%)
* no displacement of food crops is necessary
* it is great for developing countries in terms of energy and jobs
* the biodiesel byproduct, glycerine, is profitable in itself
* the waste plant mass after oil extraction can be used as a fertilizer
* the plant itself recycles 100% of the CO2 emissions produced by burning the biodieselThat's a whole lot of benefit with little or no disadvantages!The European Union biofuels directive requires a minimum level of biofuels as a proportion of fuels sold in the European Union of 2% by 2005, 5.75% by 2010 and 20% by 2020. Of course, as the President stated recently on TV, we don't have any such energy program yet. And I doubt we will anytime soon. The main green fuels will be ethanol and biodiesel, and demand for biodiesel is expected to be up to 10.5 billion litres just in European countries by 2010.Folks... this "biodiesel" thing is going to happen whether you like it or not! I know there are a lot of farmers, entrepreneurs, and investors reading this who can cash in on this biodiesl craze. They are already doing it big time in Europe so it's just a matter of time before it happens here. And by "it", I mean using Jatropha to make biodiesel. If you have not been informed yet, well, it is time that you were told that Saturday is the end of daylight savings time.Such an event may not be a big deal to many people, however, the National Road Safety Foundation, or the NRSF, says that the roads and the highways in the United States are going to be quite more dangerous. This is explained by Adele Kristiansson, the director of marketing and legislative affairs for NRSF. Kristiansson shares, "Since night falls an hour earlier, the commute home from work or school will likely be in the dark. Also, the change of waking time coupled with earlier nightfall throws off our internal clock. It can take as long as two weeks for our bodies to adjust." She does even add, "Drowsiness is a condition most drivers fail to recognize, and it can be as dangerous as drinking and driving." The NRSF is a non-profit group that exists so as to help provide programs on driver safety for various groups, institutions, and organizations.As per her claim that drowsiness can prove to be just as fatal as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, there are really studies done with US motorists being the cases. According to them, there are about sixty per cent of these motorists have admitted to driving while feeling sleepy. And a huge 33% have bravely said that they had experienced falling asleep while driving.So it is very much important to do know the necessary things about driving and about being a drowsy driver. Sure, everything may not be a big deal if you were only to lose a couple of GMC truck parts if you got caught in an accident. However, if you were to lose your limb or even your life, that would certainly be something to worry about.Anyhow, the NRSF does say that if you are about to drive and you feel the signs of being drowsy, it is important that you do pull over first to a safe area and take a break first. The Irish Driving Test Technical Checks - an Introduction

Since early 2005 there has been an additional aspect to the Irish Driving Test …that of a series of Technical Check Questions which precede the practical drive. These questions had been included in other European Driving Tests for a number of years. They form an essential part of the Weekly Checks that all Drivers should be performing on their vehicles.
Why do we need to carry out these Technical Checks every week? Well in case you hadn't noticed a car, or any motorised vehicle for that matter, consists of rather a large number of moving parts, most of which are hidden from view! You know the old saying Out of Sight—Out of Mind? Well unless you learn how to identify all these hidden parts , particularly those that you the Driver have control over you are going to finding out rather quickly that this Driving lark is a lot more tedious, frustrating and much more expensive than you first imagined! In addition to this, an ignorance of the Technical Checks will put you in an extremely hazardous condition on the road and fast forward you into an illegal minefield!Your safety and that of your passengers is of paramount importance and it goes without saying that if you are driving a car that is not properly checked and maintained you will be a menace on the road and a great danger to all other road users. The phrase "all other Road users" encompasses Pedestrians of course who make up a high proportion of the fatal accident statistics here in Ireland every year.Pedestrians of all ages create one of the biggest hazards to Drivers particularly Learner Drivers who have not yet built up their awareness skills to a higher level. Many elderly Pedestrians are not Drivers and therefore are unaware of the dangers posed by vehicles.
Very young pedestrians have yet to learn any Road Sense or Road Craft and are particularly vulnerable. Teenage Pedestrians are half asleep most of the time and the rest of the time are either on the cell phone or playing games on the pavement or sidewalk, rendering them oblivious of the danger surrounding them. Failure to understand the necessity to carry out your weekly and sometime daily vehicle checks could put you in a serious confrontation with a Pedestrian that will end in tears and more!The details of the Technical Checks and questions and answers are available throughout our series of articles but a good place to start your Technical Check Mastery would be the Drivers Manual which came with your car. This will enable you to identify the various pieces of equipment that require your attention on a weekly or more frequent basis. Your Driving Instructor should be teaching you all of these aspects on the very first Lesson providing it is not pouring with rain. Even so it is quite often the case that it is raining on a Driving Test and the Examiner does not wish either you or himself to get drenched so it is possible to be given the questions and for you to answer even if the Bonnet or Hood is not opened!Failure to answer the Technical questions on the Driving Test adequately and you should be prepared to lose one of your valuable marks!

The major key to making the engine last a long time is simple and cheap. Change the oil regularly. Change the oil every three months or 3,000 miles. If you think this is too often consider the extra $60 a year as an investment that will pay off handsomely when you sell the car.When doing a used car inspection, be sure to verify that the oil changes were done on schedule. The engine can be ruined in 3 months if mistreated. A damaged engine is a very costly repair. Even a very reliable engine won't last long without oil.In a cold climate the first sign of damage is usually is difficult starting in cold weather. The damaged engine cannot generate the compression required to do a cold weather start.What are some of the indicators of poor maintenance to look for? An excessively dirty engine, burnt oil smell in the engine compartment, and oil leaks. All are indicators of poor maintenance. Dealers almost always power wash the engine before anyone can see it. So the opposite does not necessarily mean it was well maintained.With the engine off, look at the internal side of the oil filler cap and the inside of the engine. The inside of the oil cap and the internal engine parts visible through the oil filler opening should be clean. If they are covered with thick black deposits, it is an indication that the engine oil was not changed regularly.To check the oil level, make sure the car is on a level surface. The engine should be off. Use the engine oil dipstick (it has a bright color handle saying oil). Unless the oil was changed recently, the oil condition is the same condition as the engine.Remove the dipstick, wipe it off and reinsert it back in the tube. Remove it again and look on the end of the stick. The dipstick has two marks on it or simply crossed area (about 1 inch long). The upper mark indicates FULL, the lower mark indicates LOW. When the level is good the oil level will be above the LOW mark and below the FULL mark on the dipstick.An indicator of a potential problem is when the oil level is lower than the LOW mark or the oil appears very dirty (gritty between your fingers and very dark); the car may use too much oil or the oil has been poorly maintained.Look up on the shaft of the dipstick itself. If the shaft of the dipstick is not clean and has black deposits, this also indicates that the engine was maintained poorly.Look at the tailpipe while the engine is running. If smoke is present the color tells the story. Blue smoke indicates that the engine is worn and burns oil. Black smoke indicates excessive fuel consumption. It is a proven fact that windshield scratches, nicks and chips can cause added glare and increase or add blind spots while driving. According to the Michigan State Police, a windshield must be free of any imperfections caused by road debris as it will greatly impede vision and driver safety. Many windshield problems like cracks, scratches and nicks can easily be fixed or repaired without replacement.Windshield repair was started as a sideline business and has grown into a nationwide aftermarket and additional service. It can be found at almost every used car dealership. There are outside crews that provide services like windshield repair, scratch and paint, headlight repair and restoration and paintless dent removal. All you have to do is ask a used car salesperson or the used car manager about it. If they don't have someone there ask whom they would recommend. How To Negotiate When Buying A Car

I recently purchased a new vehicle when visiting my son and was able to use some of my negotiating techniques:1.Be Prepared and Do Your ResearchBeing prepared is of the utmost importance. Before even going to the showroom, one should first look at the ads in the newspaper and look at car sales at Edmunds.com or a similar website. That will give you an idea what is available and the going prices. In my situation, we actually went to the lot after it was closed and looked at the cars that we liked and saw the prices. One car model had a special discount of $7000. There was also a special for zero percent financing. The next day we called and asked the receptionist about the $7000 discount. She told us that the $7000 discount did not apply if using the zero percent financing. However, she did tell us that there was a $3000 dollar discount if one used the zero percent financing. That was useful information because we knew that the $3000 discount was a given and we would have to negotiate to get a higher discount. If you are not prepared, don't go to the showroom yet. You need to know what you want before you get there.2.Bring A Friend and Give Him/Her A Role.Buying a car should be a team effort. Bring a friend or relative or two. In my case, I brought my son and very pregnant daughter-in-law. We each had a role. Whatever was said my daughter-in-law was supposed to say. "Let's go home and think it over." Sometimes the deal that the dealer presents sounds so good that it is tempting to accept it on face value. We had agreed beforehand that no matter what the deal was, I would say that we needed some time to think it over and needed to meet in private to discuss further. Our strategy was to have a dollar amount. I did not want to pay over $25,000 for the car no matter what. This kind of negotiation can be very stressful and this is another reason why having friends or family by your side is a plus.3.Read The Fine Print And Know What All The Costs Are.When we met with the sales rep, he started talking gibberish about the various costs and it was hard to follow exactly what he was talking about. At that point it is important to use your own checklist and write down all the costs that are being presented and add them up. Don't be afraid to ask what a particular cost item is. Look at the sticker price and all the features that are presented. What are the extra or hidden fees? Maybe there is some leeway. Our strategy was to have a dollar amount that I did not want to go below. I did not want to pay over $25,000 for the car. It did not matter where the discounts came from, but the bottom line or deal breaker was anything above $25,000. As it turned out, this was the last day of the month, which is usually a good time to buy a car because the dealerships are very competitive as to who has the best track record for the month and are sometimes willing to go lower to get the sale so it can be counted in this month's sales4. Ask for One More thingI knew which car I wanted and knew that I would probably leave the showroom with that particular car. It was the color I wanted and had the special features that were on my wish list. However, I wanted to get the best financial deal possible. I was not planning on getting financing, but the zero financing was too good to pass up. When I was comparing the price to another smaller and cheaper car, I realized that with the financing costs of the other car, my car was actually cheaper in the long run. If the dealership absolutely says the price cannot go any lower, then see if something else can be added to the deal as a sweetener. Is there an accessory you want that could make the deal more attractive such as floor mats, or steering wheel cover? Be creative and flexible. If there are two similar cars, maybe you could switch to the better car for the price you are negotiating. Maybe you can negotiate service for the car. Your want list is only limited by your imagination.5.Stick To Your Guns and Don't Say Yes Right Away.As my mother used to say, it does not hurt to ask; the worse that can happen is that they say no. If you think that they have made their final offer, stick to your guns and try one more round. In my case, I was trying to stay under $25,000. The dealer came back with a figure that was a couple hundred dollars more than the $25,000 with a plausible explanation that this was absolutely the lowest they could go. At that point, part of me wanted to accept that amount and just pay the $200, but I forced myself to say that I wanted the sales rep to go back one more time to see if he could come down to the $25,000. The dealer accepted that offer, probably, because it was the end of the month and the amount in question was relatively small. Considering the conservative, best-selling Accord, Honda stretched its
manufacturing boundaries substantially with the Element.Since its debut in 2003, the vehicle has frequently been described with
two succinct comments: "It's ugly" and "It's a box with four wheels."There's no disputing the Element has among the most conspicuous
appearances on the road. But good looks (or lack of good looks) are
subjective. More important, Honda doesn't make a car without a plan.The Element was introduced as an urban utilitarian vehicle with hopes it
would appeal to younger drivers seeking pickup truck cargo space in an
enclosed area. The vehicle has attracted a young crowd to some
degree, but the average age of buyers to date is 43, according to J.D.
Power & Associates.Regardless, Element owners are largely those who've sought a vehicle
with easy access to cargo areas for sporting equipment groceries,
luggage and work supplies.In the first extended trek in my weekly test drive, I drove the four-wheel
drive EX model – one of three available options – on a 175-mile round-
trip journey to Berkeley, Calif. It had a 4-cylinder, 16-value, 2.4-liter, 160-
horsepower engine with a 4-speed automatic transmission.I departed in a light late afternoon rain, drove into windy, clear skies and
returned late at night after intermittent showers made the interstate
surface slick. Considering the three different weather patterns, the
Element adjusted well and offered a comfortable drive. The car felt
secure on the road and it has near-panoramic visibility from the slightly
elevated driver's seat.My vehicle had a silver metallic exterior and gray/blue interior, both
basic colors but complementary considering the vehicle's intended utility
use.The interior design is straightforward with few gadgets, easy-to-use
ventilation, air-conditioning, heat and radio controls, and a nicely angled
transmission box and shifter. It's located on the lower dash, not between
the seats on a front console.The two front doors open wide and have easy entry and exit. The side
doors open with an interior side door latch and only in combination with
the front door handle. The side doors also open to 90-degree angles
and that affords a massive amount of interior space for loading or
unloading the aforementioned needs of the utilitarian-type owners.Another touted feature in the Element's multi-use theme is its scratch-
resistant, waterproof interior. Although I didn't test the claim, the vehicle's
cloth seats are designed to get wet as is the rubberlike floor covering.
There are tales of some Element owners hosing out their vehicles'
interiors after perhaps transporting muddy mountain bikes or wet
hunting dogs.The vehicle's riding comfort and steering are satisfactory and its easy
maneuverability in tight positions is impressive considering its height
and shape. The vehicle isn't a luxury sedan, with its prominent road
noise level one sure measurement.The EX, all-wheel drive model has also a rear-seat sunroof, air-
conditioning, cruise control, alloy wheels, ABS brakes, power windows
and CD player. Some of those options are available on other Element
models.None of the automatic or manual transmission Elements have earned
particularly good acceleration marks. The EX model, as others have
noted, needed a full throttle to maintain its speed on a few medium-

I pulled into an angled side street parking spot and two gardeners
began to stare at my vehicle with puzzled looks. Did I park over the line?
Did I not see a fire hydrant. Did I miss some other restricted parking
designation?"Hey, guys, anything wrong?" I asked."No, nothing," one replied. "I just haven't seen that car before. That's
Tiger Woods car, isn't it? It's really a great-looking S.U.V."True enough. The 2004 Buick Rainier is the vehicle the famed golfer
touts in television commercials. And with Buick's trademark front grill
style and my test car's deep black exterior, 2004 VB Rainier is an
impressive sight.But the exterior is further complemented by a well-designed interior, a
5.3-liter engine and a host of standard features that sets it apart from the
GMC Envoy, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mercury
Mountaineer, the comparable offerings in its category.As one example, the Rainier has a standard 6-cylinder engine, but
there's an optional V8, albeit a $1,500 option. As such, it's the only mid-
sized, five-seat SUV with a V8. The Rainier is only available with a four-
speed automatic transmission, but options include rear-wheel drive with
traction control or the all-wheel drive my vehicle included.It's nice the Rainier is marketed as a five-passenger vehicle and doesn't
claim to be larger as is often the case with other manufacturers. Head
and knee space in the front and rear seats is more than adequate.The Rainier couldn't drive more smoothly, particularly considering its
power and versatility. While exceedingly quiet and stylish, a towing
package and wiring harness is standard for more rugged needs.But when driven as a passenger vehicle and not a working car, the
Rainier's quietness is the result of 2004 model's thicker laminated glass
in the windshield and side windows. Likewise, sound-reducing material
has been added into the body.The console and instrumentation is attractive, but the monotone color
dial scheme is not as visible at night when compared to other S.U.V.s
with multicolored patterns. The controls and switches are well-
positioned, however, and the comfort and convenience features are
plentiful.Consider: tilt, leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio and climate
controls, cruise control, leather upholstery, eight-way, power front bucket
seats with driver-side lumbar adjustment, heated power windows, power
door locks and four interior map lights, among many other features. The
power sunroof is an $885 option and with a $685 destination charge,
the price of my vehicle reached $40,315.While side and window curtain air bags might be expected as standard
for a luxury S.U.V., the side front-seat airbags are a $350 option and
curtain side window airbags are not available.One unique feature is the included one-year emergency service
provided by OnStar. I accidentally pushed the small button located on
the bottom of the rear-review mirror and the operator answered in what
seemed like a nanosecond. I apologized for the inadvertent call and
received a pleasant response. Still, it was nice to know the system works
so efficiently.The Rainier's one drawback is its estimated 15 mph in city driving and
18 mph in highway conditions. It's an issue prevalent in much of the

The function of a lubrication medium is:1. To form a film between moving bearing components so that metal to metal contact is prevented.2. To reduce friction and eliminate wear3. To protect against corrosion4. To seal against impurities like dust, dirt, water.In order for the oil film to be formed between the moving bearing
components, the film must be sufficiently thick even under heavy
load, high temperatures or vibrations.Some sleeve bearings that has very heavy loads, like in the
crosshead bearings of diesel engines, usually have provisions for
injecting pressurized oil to float the shafts. This method is
called hydrostatic lubrication.However, the most common method of lubrication for sleeve bearings
is by the hydrodynamic method. When the two surfaces of a bearing
and shaft move rapidly relative to one another, the oil is carried
along the shaft to fill the gap between shaft and bearing. When
the moving components become completely separated by a cohesive
film of lubricant, hydrodynamic lubrication occurs. Hydrodynamic
lubrication prevents wear in moving parts, as there is no metallic
contact between them. The bearing metals can last for a long time.During starting time, the rotating shaft does not have sufficient
speed to pick up the lubricant. The film separating the moving
surfaces is very thin - with only the thickness of a molecule. This
is a condition called boundary-layer lubrication. With this
condition, friction losses increases, producing heat, which raises
the temperature of the lubricant, thereby reducing its viscosity so
that the load-carrying capacity of the film is even lower. In worst
case conditions, the surfaces can even seize together.For rolling contact bearings like ball bearings, a condition called
elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication occurs. At the point of contact,
the ball deflects and flattens out slightly for a moment under the
high pressure. When the ball rolls on, the contact surfaces return
to their original shape. However, the lubricant is not forced away
from the point of contact due to the dramatic increase in viscosity.
When the ball has passed, the viscosity falls back again.When grease is used for lubricating ball bearings, they also act as

~Car Accident Insurance Claim~ Regarding Impacts And Injuries

As of January 2003 it was determined that in the good ole' US of A, there were approximately 12.3 million motor vehicle accidents involving over 21 million vehicles last year. This amounts to a little over one crash per second. Let's take a look at four of the most common of these gazillion impacts and the typical injuries they cause.#1. LOW SPEED IMPACTS - - ESPECIALLY REAR-ENDERS: These are crashes that are considered to be any collision that takes place at speeds under 10 MPH. While there is absolutely no justification to call it a "Low Speed" impact that's what the insurance industry loves to identify them as. Why ? Because a moniker like that is supposed to indicate that the, "so-called impact", you were subjected to could not possibly have caused an injury.It's true that when such a crash does take place there's often not a lot of damage done to the motor vehicle and yet, in most cases, people involved in these types of accidents more often than not suffer injuries - - neck injuries especially!Although the insurance industry would like to have those making a claim think differently an injury can and absolutely does occur when a low impact collision takes place. The most common is identified as the "Whiplash". This takes place when the occupants don't have the slightest idea about the impending collision so they can't brace themselves by forcing their back and/or neck against the seat or headrest. Because of this their body gets whipped and snapped about something fierce.Automobile bumpers are built to withstand up to a 5 MPH crash without damage. This is not done to insure the safety of the occupant but rather to protect and limit the damage to the bumpers, keeping the cost of repair to a minimum. Many times vehicle to vehicle impacts can sustain an impact of 8 to 9 MPH before there's recognizable damage to the motor vehicle. However, when the bumper doesn't crumble and absorb the force of the impact, more of that crash is felt by the occupants. IMMEDIATE INJURIES: The individual that's been crashed into by another (even at only 5 MPH) is thrown forward with a severe jerking motion - - causing necks to snap and backs to twist. Because of this many "Soft Tissue" styled injuries take place, including multiple body bruises, plus chest and rib injuries. In most cases adjusters attempt to deny the possibility of injuries in a low speed impact but research substantiates just the opposite! Sure, the motor vehicle will show little damage but the velocity and accompanying force have to be transferred somewhere, and that's to those sitting in that vehicle. Cars are built to withstand such minor impacts - - the human body is not!#2. FRONTAL COLLISIONS: In most frontal impacts the occupant's can generally brace themselves because they're usually aware of the collision they're about to be subjected to. In Frontal Collisions the speed and weight of the vehicle play a role in the injuries of the occupant. (The more the vehicle crumbles at impact the less severe the injuries to the occupants. Many times airbags will deploy). In frontal impact collisions the speed and size of the vehicle determines the injuries that can take place. (And - - getting back to rear-end collisions for just a moment - - the striking vehicle not only undergoes a collapse, but transfers momentum to the car that's been struck by pushing it forward. The airbag may or may not explode. This depends upon the rigidity of the vehicle that's been struck).IMMEDIATE INJURIES: Head and neck, back, spine, rib and clavicle, arms and legs, concussions, soft tissue, internal, dislocations, abrasions, cuts and bruises.48 to 72 hours later: Headache, blurred vision, dizziness and loss of taste, smell or hearing. Also, difficulty breathing, blood in urine or stool, swelling, loss of motion and visualized bruising take place.#3. SIDE IMPACT: Many times the occupants head will hit the side window and bounce off of it. There are no air bags nor bumpers, engines, etc., to help protect ones body or absorb the force of the impact. IMMEDIATE INJURIES: Head and neck, arms & legs, soft tissue, dislocations, scrapes and bruises. 48 to 72 hours later: Pain, headache, blurred vision, dizziness, loss of taste, smell or hearing, numbness or tingling (and basically the same as those listed above) so, at the risk of being repetitious but because it's so important, I must say once again: It's of major importance that the individual exposed to impact - - no matter how slight it may seem to have been - - should immediately be examined by a medical professional.#4. ROLL-OVER ACCIDENTS: The typical roll-over accident is very serious. The most common factors in single vehicle accidents are approaching a curve at too high a speed, leaving the pavement or highway, or over-correcting the steering wheel - - particularly in vehicles with a short wheel base. The severity of injuries to the occupants generally depends on the beginning velocity of speed, the number of rolls, condition of the vehicle, and what your motor vehicle rolled through, over and into! Damage to the vehicle is generally extensive. It has been determined that 60% of the economic costs from roll-overs resulted from occupant ejection, and that the initial roll-over speed was between 40 to 60 MPH. (A recent study reported that restrained occupants showed a higher proportion of neck injuries than the unrestrained).IMMEDIATE INJURIES: The whole nine yards - all of those as detailed above.*******************The bottom line (to all 4 of the above) is that in all motor vehicle accidents - - no matter how minor the damage it's of the greatest importance that each and every individual immediately visit a medical professional for a physical examination and/or consultation. If you live in the area of North America known as the Snow Belt, then a good set of winter tires are an indispensable weapon in your annual battle with the elements. Drivers living outside the belt who sometimes encounter snow, or are skiers should also consider moving up to winter tires from all-season tires, especially if the all-seasons have more than a couple of years of wear on them. All-season tires are designed to handle acceptably under a large variety of conditions, which is by nature a compromise. In other words, Jack of All Trades, Master of None. A typical Super High Perfomance tire with treads designed to hold the road at 200 degrees F will become hard and brittle at temperatures below freezing, and turn into Super Low Perfomance tires! Only winter tires are designed for optimal perfomance in sub-zero conditions.Using winter tires will lengthen the life of your summer tires since they'll be sitting in storage for part of the year. That makes these snow-beaters an economically sensible purchase. Not only that, but having a set of winter wheels will protect your summer wheels finish from the hearsh environment of raod salt, ice, grime and slush existing on winter roads.For stopping power on icy streets and acceleration in slushy spots, winter tires are a must. Mechanic Shortages in Oil Change, Auto Repair, and Service Businesses

Mechanic Shortages? You Bet. Nothing is more serious than Labor issues. In Arizona the incoming Governor is poised to try to train skilled labor and set the bar higher for those jobs, which need filling. Everything from constructions to maintenance. For every 10 mechanics that leave or retire only three enter the market. Thus supply and demand is dictating increased wages, but not very much and certainly not as much as expected. Some is offset by low wage payers such as Wal-Mart oil changing technicians on the low end. But the Wyoming Automotive technical Institute tells me that there are many high paying jobs waiting for every graduate as a matter of fact they could never fill all the openings across the nation, they would need 10 campuses? Perhaps The University of Phoenix or some other technical college may fill the gap, but we need people now. Yes, our company, the Oil Change Guys needs them and so does the rest of the industry.The National Institute for Service Excellence has certified 430,000 mechanics so far, but many are already mechanics switching jobs and getting the certificate, same with the ASE program. One bulletin board in the Oil Change Industry is hammering on Wal-Mart for secretly visiting their facilities and leaving "come to work at Wal-Mart" cards around the shop, offering benefits, better hours, stock, etc. Quick Lubes are already seeing a price war brewing and some will not admit lost market share, but they have lost customers and should probably not blame the oil interval challenge or the economy as much and look at the big box store competition.Training on the low end for technicians to change oil is fairly easy, but a no-knowledge individual hurts production time and stands around and moves too slow, for at least a week or so, hurting volumes, sales and time to change. Most facilities are partnering skilled with unskilled in a mentoring program for one to tow weeks in the beginning, which usually has good results, we recommend a trainee to ride shot gun for one month before taking the truck units or van out by themselves on a scheduled fleet oil change route. It is serious business because whether fixed or mobile, you really live or die by efficiency.The average number of cars for the industry at a fixed facility is 41.1 cars a day based on a survey with plus, minus 10% accuracy done by National Oil News. Mechanic Shortages? You Bet. Nothing is more serious than Labor issues. In Arizona the incoming Governor is poised to try to train skilled labor and set the bar higher for those jobs, which need filling. Everything from constructions to maintenance. For every 10 mechanics that leave or retire only three enter the market. Thus supply and demand is dictating increased wages, but not very much and certainly not as much as expected. Some is offset by low wage payers such as Wal-Mart oil changing technicians on the low end. But the Wyoming Automotive technical Institute tells me that there are many high paying jobs waiting for every graduate as a matter of fact they could never fill all the openings across the nation, they would need 10 campuses? Perhaps The University of Phoenix or some other technical college may fill the gap, but we need people now. Yes, our company, the Oil Change Guys needs them and so does the rest of the industry.The National Institute for Service Excellence has certified 430,000 mechanics so far, but many are already mechanics switching jobs and getting the certificate, same with the ASE program. One bulletin board in the Oil Change Industry is hammering on Wal-Mart for secretly visiting their facilities and leaving "come to work at Wal-Mart" cards around the shop, offering benefits, better hours, stock, etc. Quick Lubes are already seeing a price war brewing and some will not admit lost market share, but they have lost customers and should probably not blame the oil interval challenge or the economy as much and look at the big box store competition.Training on the low end for technicians to change oil is fairly easy, but a no-knowledge individual hurts production time and stands around and moves too slow, for at least a week or so, hurting volumes, sales and time to change. You have no doubt seen the Toyota Pirius and all the media hoopla about Car of The Year and you probably said well great but it looks like a dog. Well in 2002 you are right the total sum of all hybrids sold in the US was less than 30,000. In 2003 Toyota sold less than 100,000 total hybrids. But we are in luck because the hybrids had DC motors in them too and need 0W-30 to lubricate and keep cool. Meaning the Oil Change Industry is safe still.You have heard it said heat is the enemy, well in a DC Motor heat is very much the enemy and they usually are requiring a top brand synthetic like Mobil One. Amsoil is also hot on the scene with their formulas. Today you will not see a lot of fuel cells on the road they cost 6-10 times as much and there are few if any places to fill them up. Next year GM is introducing them to DC where there will be a fill up station and free cars for politicians to try them out. But still even McCormick from GM admits as he did in Phoenix speech this past week to his former University spectators we are looking at 2010 for GM to really ramp up and there are things to service on fuel cells, which we have discussed on this board previously. In 2002 all brands together did not equal 30,000 in 2003 Toyota alone almost got to 100,000. As far as Domestic Hybrids, well there is the Voyager and Ford Ranger all electric but mostly for show and a few government agencies on matching fund grants and tons of CNG vehicles and conversion kits out there. We recently discussed taxi-cabs, city buses and military vehicles on this web site.In 2004 it was an incredible year for the Hybrid Car, they could not keep them on the shelves and owners usually got a $5,000 appreciation almost immediately, even on eBay the bidding was above sticker price. Domestic Auto Manufacturers offer hybrid options on the GM Silverado Pick-up and Sierra Pick-up. Ford and their little SUV mini-Escape car. GM is offering as an option in 2006 possibly but surely by 2007 options on the Malibu, Yukon, Tahoe. Currently in 2004-2005 you will be able to get a Saturn Vue or Chevy Equinox in hybrid. Honda has several units out, but they are tough to get. Other off brands have not been very successful. All those cool Electric Cars did not pan out very well due to prototype status, cost to maintain and high electric bills, but many have been out now some 15 years. Electric Cars have been around for ever, Fuel Cell is not that new of a concept thought of some 100 years ago. We are seeing many cars now with electric power steering which add .05-2% efficiency in gas mileage in cars like the Honda S2000 and Saturn Vue and we will be seeing those 42 volt accessory cars soon which claim to add as many as 5-6 mpg. Which is very significant indeed. We shall see, but all in all it looks as if the industry of Quick Lube will be changing, just a lot slower than those "Futurists" would have you believe. It surely is past the point of science fiction, since the technology exists and the cars are available for those with big bucks and clout to find them or are ultra environmentalists, but generally they would not be popping into a quick lube service company anyway, chances are they would be higher end customers and send the nanny to the dealership for service or have a mobile service come to them on their time.We do predict radical changes in the industry, but every one is good to go as is for about 5-7 years.
