Innumerable numbers of believers have suffered torture and been cruelly put to death for the cause of Christ, which they willingly served. Warned by the Lord Himself that they would be betrayed and brought before governors and kings (Lk. 21:12; Mk. 13:9), they were stirred to great deeds of heroism and paid the ultimate price rather than deny their Lord and Savior.While working as missionaries within the nation of India we came to learn of Graham Stuart Staines, an Australian missionary who was burned to death. Graham and his two sons were ambushed by a frenzied mob with flaming torches. From Stephen to Staines, the 2000-year history of Christianity is crowned with martyrs. As Tertulian, the historian has said, "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church." Historically, martyrs have only strengthened the church of God – from the first century to the twenty-first century. No century has passed without the Church being troubled by enemies.While I ministered throughout the islands of Indonesia, I came in contact with people who knew martyrs that had been put to death by malicious Muslims. The Satanic attacks and hostile assaults against believers in Indonesia explain the reason why God's power is so great there upon His Church. "Inasmuch as you are partakers of Christ's sufferings," so too shall you rejoice when you experience His divine power and glory (1 Pet. 4:13). As many rulers and antichrist governments have learned, the more you persecute and slaughter Christians the more God keeps resurrecting the dead and His Church in the face of such opposition.
