Break the Downward Spiral

Author : Stuart Rosen
Sometimes we get into this downward spiral that we start to lose all control of our life. The only way seems to be down... and if we don't do anything, it will be. It's time for drastic measures if we're going to prevent a crash. We have to regain control, if we're ever going to fly again.Realize the downward cycleThe first thing to do is realize that we're actually in a downward spiral. Everything is spinning out of control, so it's confusing. Recognizing that it's happening is the first part of gaining control. Gather up as much information as possible about this downward spiral. Where is it heading? How fast am I going? How close am I to disaster?"I am in control"We actually have to tell ourselves that we're in control, even if we don't believe it right away. If we don't, we'll end up panicking and that'll only make matters worse. "I CAN control it; I CAN get out of it." Once a downward spiral has actually started, there are a bunch of other factors now taking over. That can make us feel helpless, if we let it. We really aren't, but we really aren't in control either. Now is the time to TAKE control.Control the symptomsOnce we're in the downward spiral, the cause is irrelevant. Much like treating a runny nose and aching head of a cold, go after the symptoms and control it from there. In an every day life that's out-of-control, it could look like no time for anything, a messy house, tons of arguments with those around us. The quickest solution is to clean up, get organized and stop trying to be "right" all the time... that will solve most of the downward spiral fairly quickly.Stop it!!Of course, fixing the symptoms will only solve the immediate symptoms, not the actual problems. For real solutions, we need more. The spiral happens because the outside forces are now stronger than the inside forces. We literally have to apply the brakes to the outside. What that looks like is saying "stop it" regardless if anyone outside hears it. "Stop it!" stop the effects it has on us. Saying "NO" allows us to reach the "YES" that's inside. It empowers us because we refuse to let ourselves be controlled by the outside.Gently... Gently...We also can't just push in the opposite direction. That can actually make it worse. Being gentle, however odd that might feel at first is the only way to EASE OUT of the problem.Point awayFinally, when things start to ease up, it's time to start moving away from the downward spiral. Getting out means gaining control, so that we can fly again.Stuart Rosen, best known as "Gurustu" is dedicated to making the world a little lighter.
