Is It Stress or Is It Memorex?

Author : Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD
According to a study by the American Institute of Stress, job stress and related problems cost companies an estimated $300 billion or more a year, an average of $7,500 per worker. This leads to more than half of the 550 million workdays lost annually. We think stress is something to avoid. However, the concept that stress is bad is a misnomer. Any event can be construed as stressful—i.e. the belief about the event is what creates the event as stressful or non-stressful. Thus, the key to avoiding stress is to redefine stress. In "Redefining Stress" you learn ways to make what you considered stress to work to your advantage! Also incorporating other life enhancing habits such as relaxation, Yoga, Meditation and healing of emotional wounds—a.k.a. trauma will effectively change how one perceives and responds to life's travail. There is no question that the misperception that stress is bad is the number one cause of disability, and employers end up paying billions of dollars annually on lost productivity and healthcare costs.Everyday, employers are jumping on the bandwagon to help create a more productive, healthy and less-stressed workforce. By offering up a variety of health and wellness programs, both the company's profitability and long-term productivity increases. However, if the health and wellness programs adhere to the old paradigm that stress is a natural state of affairs and the solution is to learn how to cope better, one can only achieve a fraction of relief.Whereas if one learns that one creates what one experiences in life through beliefs—including stress reaction one can change the outcome. Therefore, if one changes one's beliefs, one can change one's experience. This shift in belief provides long-term and total relief from all of life's travail. This is so, because if one changes one's beliefs there is no 'stress' reaction to the specific events.Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD, Author, International Speaker.
