HOW TO SPOT AN ENLIGHTENED MASTER
If the average spiritual aspirant were asked to describe the state of perfection they are striving towards, they might use the words God-Realization, Self-Realization, or just Enlightenment. But what would it look like if you became enlightened? If forced to form a detailed description, you might say…Being enlightened means: You will no longer experience intense doubt, frustration, anger, or other negative emotions. You will be non-attached and therefore you cease to have strong likes, dislikes, or strong preferences for how anything turns out in life. You will have the capacity to respond to tough spiritual questions with insightful and eloquent answers. It means having the ability to heal physical illnesses and maybe impart enlightenment to others with only a touch or a glance. Anything you need in life will somehow come to you at just the right time. You will no longer have troublesome relationships with friends, business partners, or family members. All of your relations with others will run smoothly. It means your intuitive faculties would be so open that if you wanted to you could read a person's mind or see into their past or future. It means you will be immune to suffering on all levels. Your presence will be so profoundly peaceful that spiritual seekers would probably flock to you and feel deep bliss when they are in your presence. The more I read about Self-Realized souls, Enlightened Masters, renowned Saints, well known Mystics, and even Incarnations and Avatars, the more I see that some of these descriptions about enlightenment are serious exaggerations. Take a moment to ponder the following question.DO ENLIGHTENED MASTERS EVER:- Get angry, upset, or intensely frustrated?- Retain strong likes and dislikes?- Not have a brilliant answer or solution?- Keep studying and learning even after they "know it all"?- Experience suffering due to the pains of illness or injury?- Continue earning, saving, and spending money?- Come across people who aren't convinced of their divinity?- Have troubled relationships with friends or family members?- Feel depressed, lonely, or overwhelmed?EXAMPLES FROM HISTORY
What follows below are just a few examples off the top of my head: Moneychangers irritated JESUS, so he turned over their tables in a fit of rage. He also spoke to many people who didn't feel bliss in his presence but instead laughed in his face. BUDDHA, rather than openly discuss his concerns with his wife, he abandoned her in the middle of the night in order to go figure things out for himself. RAMAKRISHNA was often in states of spiritual ecstasy, but instead of realizing that he was an Avatar most people just thought he was crazy. Also, even after Ramakrishna had attained the vision of God he practiced other religious paths and even studied under a second guru. VIVEKANANDA went through bouts of serious doubt about achieving his goals and also suffered intensely from illness towards the end of his life. RAM DASS (Richard Alpert) is a contemporary teacher who I deeply respect and who millions of americans recognize to be a highly advanced soul. He suffered a stroke recently but hasn't tapped into any reserve of yogic powers to heal himself.X MARKS THE SPOT
It seems that many of us tend to have a highly incorrect notions about what our lives would be like if we actually attained enlightenment. Do we think that after having the vision of God, realizing our true Self, or experiencing cosmic consciousness, somehow all our problems will melt away? Do we hope that we'll become so infused with divinity that we will totally transcend all the pesky little problems of the human condition? Why point out these myths about enlightenment? We might already know a great deal about the path we're on and we might know about many of the tools we'll be using along the way, but it's critical to have an accurate map that clearly shows the destination. It's very helpful to have a working compass that points true north. It's very helpful to be knowledgeable about the destination ahead and to be able to talk openly with those who have been there and back.Exactly what it does look like to be both fully human and fully divine is left for you to decide. The fact is… you already are. You just aren't experiencing that unity as your everyday reality. …Unless of course… You are.Zachary Perlman is a warm soul who is passionate about the study and comparison of spiritual wisdom.
