Moving Beyond the "Yeah, Buts"

Author : Sharon Marquart
How many times have you had to deal with someone having the dreaded "yeah but" disease? You know the symptoms. A friend or spouse feels stuck about a situation, asks you for advice, you kindly listen and offer a suggestion or two, and their first reaction is, "yeah but." Sound familiar? How many times have you caught the disease? The symptoms are the same for all of us, it's a very contagious disease! Unfortunately some fall into the "yeah but" black hole where the disease takes over their entire life. I call the "yeah but" syndrome a disease because it causes us to feel dis-eased - uneasy, not living in an easy flow of life.I think most of us dream of a life that flows easily and allows us to move freely through all our experiences. We dream of a life that is fun and full of lighthearted laughter. We all long for experiences that leave us feeling validated, loved and appreciated. And then, our "blocks of resistance" get in our way and the flow of life gets jammed up. Our easy flowing pattern gets caught up in our fears and blocks of resistance. We feel stuck and become spiritually immobile, seeking answers and solutions to our dilemmas. We become entangled in the dramas of who said what, internalizing and projecting what they must be thinking or what their next action will be. We become desperate to know the bottom line: "How will this affect me feeling loved?" Our insecurities and imbalances lead us to a state of vulnerability. Ultimately, we catch the "yeah but" disease.Have hope, there is a cure. Although it may take a lot of time and effort at first, as you build your inner immune system and strengthen your inner core, symptoms will become less prevalent and can actually disappear entirely.Be consciously aware of the first symptom, noted by a clear "yeah but."Take immediate action by:1. Acknowledging you are resisting.
2. Turn within for some quiet reflection, contemplation or meditation.
3. Ask yourself what the resistance is about, what are you afraid of?
4. When you discover the block, free up the energy by validating and loving yourself.
5. Keep asking yourself and others for ideas.
6. Outwardly accept all ideas by stating "Thanks, that's a great idea."
7. Keep the creative juices flowing as you open up to new possibilities.
8. One possibility may open to another, and another, and another.
9. Trust that you will know when you get to the solution.
10. Empower yourself to take action as needed.Remember this disease can spread through families and organizations. You can only cure yourself. By doing so, you offer hope for all. If someone you know has the symptoms, forward this article to them along with a blessing.
